Pam and Shawn's children grew up, built their own lives and moved to different corners of the country. Getting everyone in one place takes real planning, so when everyone finally gathered in Florida, they wanted to remember it. We met on the beach at Anna Maria Island for a sunset family photoshoot with three generations: Pam and Shawn, their grown children with their families, and the grandchildren.

A Family Reunion Worth Capturing

Family reunions are some of my favorite sessions. There is a special energy when people who miss each other all year are finally standing side by side. Hugs last a little longer, the kids get to play together again, and grandparents simply glow. My job is to capture all of it: the big group portrait for the wall, and the small in-between moments that tell the real story.

Why Anna Maria Island Is Perfect for Family Beach Photos

Anna Maria Island is one of the most beautiful places for a family beach photoshoot on the Gulf Coast. The soft white sand, sea oats on the dunes and wooden beach walkovers give natural variety without ever leaving the beach. At golden hour the sky turns soft pink and blue, and that light is incredibly flattering for every age, from a baby to a grandparent.

The Moments We Captured

  • The full family portrait, with everyone together for the first time in a long time.
  • Each family branch on its own: every couple with their children.
  • Pam and Shawn together, and with all of their grandchildren.
  • Grandpa lifting the youngest grandchild toward the sky.
  • The grandchildren sitting together in the sand, and candid laughs in between poses.
  • A playful group shot on the wooden beach stairs.

What to Wear for Family Beach Photos

This family chose a soft coastal palette: white, light blue, sage and blush. It is a perfect example of how to coordinate a large group without everyone matching exactly.

  • Pick a palette of three or four soft colors and let each person choose from it.
  • Light, flowing fabrics look beautiful in the ocean breeze.
  • Avoid logos, neon colors and busy prints.
  • Go barefoot. It looks natural on the sand and keeps the focus on faces.
  • Dress the youngest ones last, so outfits stay clean until the session starts.

Tips for Planning an Extended Family Beach Session

  • Book around sunset for the softest light and comfortable temperatures.
  • Make a short list of the groupings you want, so nobody is forgotten.
  • Choose one family member as the coordinator for timing and outfits.
  • Plan around little ones' naps and snacks. Happy kids make happy photos.
  • Bring a towel and wipes for sandy hands and feet.
